Just a note on piracy
Wednesday, September 29th, 2004Not sure if anybody has noticed in the past few years there has been an increasing number of anti-piracy measures put in place at the local multiplex, including the threat of prosecution if you were caught with a video camera filming. This is understandable in order to protect the intellectual rights of movie creators and the entire industry. However one thing I do dislike is those FACT warnings preceding the movie. It states that piracy funds terrorism and organised crime, again all true, to a point. File sharing on the internet however doesn’t fund anybody, it doesn’t fund terrorism or organised crime, unless they downloaded the movie and mass produced DVD copies. So it could be argued that if more people had access to file sharing networks that they are less likely to buy a dodgy DVD from that guy in the pub, because they can download it for free. As more people have access to broadband in the UK the occurrence of film piracy will undoubtedly increase. Anybody else seeing the similarities between the Film industry and the music industry? Wonder how long it will take for the film and TV industries to come up with the idea of iFilms or iTele?
