Zoned

Wednesday, December 22nd, 2004

So Christmas is here. Merry mince pies, one and all. In the lead up to the festivities my sister won a little LCD TV, very fancy. Is it worth over £200? Well I’m not sure, but then who can trust my opinion, I paid god knows how much for an iPod.

Other than that my day consisted of sorting out insurance for my little venture into Germany and a touch of food shopping. I had forgotten how lost I feel in supermarkets. I went around that place about 3 times to find the eggs, perhaps that’s their intention. And then those bloody plastic bags, I felt like I was disabled as I spent around 5 minutes trying to open them. All the time the happy little check out chappy, sort of stared into space. I don’t blame him it was probably the most diplomatic thing he could do, if I saw me from where he was sitting I would laugh my head off and say

“YOU FUCKING IDIOT, HOW STUPID ARE YOU IF YOU CANT OPEN A BAG! HAHA.

Instead he just looked totally ‘Zoned’ as a mate at work describes it. To become ‘Zoned’ you have to do the sort of job a trained monkey could do, the sort in which your mind could just wonder away as your hands do the work automatically. Once you can do that, it is often the case you just empty your mind, yours eyes glaze over and you sort of become the living dead. Although you don’t really desire human flash or mutter “zombie .. want .. brains, you are so bored, so unbelievably brain dead your face just hags from your face, the sick florescent light shimmers your skin as you look and feel drained of all life and emotion. Poor sod, I knew exactly where he was.

Paul the aubergine found buying porn difficult

my dappper hat doesnt cover up my face..

1000 Posts later on B3ta.com I made this. I am stating to wonder what is happening to my mind, all I think about is dancing or porn buying fruit. In other news I’m off to Berlin (yay!) for a conference on the 27th till the 29th December. Should be good fun, will give me a chance to avoid the post Christmas slump, which normally I normally suffer from as a result of too much food, excitement (cos santa is coming) and drink.

In the dead of night

Wednesday, December 15th, 2004

Cant sleep, how annoying. The problem is that I know that tomorrow I’ll be wrecked. On a lighter note, being awake at this time of night allows me to look out side and witness animals such as owls and foxes :) which reminds me, anybody remember the cartoon (and book) animals of farthing wood? Anyhow enough of my animal mindpiss, sleep is in order. Night night

So I’ve jumped into the world of Linux, not for the first time I hasten to add. I have had briefly played around with Mandrake and Red Hat but always moved back to windows 2000 when something just failed to work, such as a soundcard or the lack office program pisses me off. This time however all seems rather different. Xandros 3.0 Delux edition based on debian actually works, without spending days playing around to get it to work. Ok there are minor issues, my version of Microsoft Office slightly messes up on the install, but at least its an option! Think its fixable, will play around with it later. As for hardware detection, amazing as with virtually every distribution nower days, no pesky driver installs :). the most impressive thing with this distro is the package handler, which can handle everything with a point and click interface. From there you can find and download Xandros ready programs or debian packages, which normally work without a hitch (maybe have to add the shortcut to the very windows like “Launch” bar). Other than that I’m very happy :) Within a night I sorted out Xine so that it plays DVDs, and of cause installed Thunderbird and Firefox.

Radio killed the video star

Thursday, December 9th, 2004

Today for my dads 50th he got a digital radio. Now I have had three so far, one that I connected to my PC and died a death and two Evoke-1s. One exploded in a very rock and roll fashion one morning. Why Andy do you keep buying these things if they keep dying on you I hear you ask? Well to put it simply BBC 6 music. Before I came in to contact with this radio station I had to either listen to Signal 1, possibly one of the worst local radio stations in the country (if not the world) which plays coldseal adverts and the occasional 80s hit by vanilla ice. Then there was BBC Radio 1, with its mixture of vocal bile and mind numbing pop I quickly realised I should fear the radio, hence why it made a good alarm clock in the morning. Other than that my only reach into music was perhaps Sky’s music television channels, but although they try to make programs, they tend lightweight and American. Problematic when you want to here intelligent discussion and new music. I began listening to 6music in my first year at university, mainly as a technological experiment bit of a geeky thing I know. However when I first actually listened to the radio channel it showed me that the radio doesn’t have to be full of adverts, Robbie Williams and Britney Spears. The BBC had basically given music listeners a station to listen to, rather than station to bore us with its dull naffness. Thank you BBC. Oh and on a side note, Jane Gazzo at night has possibly one of the nicest voices in the world. mm Jane Gazzos voice, I think I want her to announce the apocalypse in that soft Australian accent, it would be less of a shock.
